History

ZIPLOC AND THE INCREDIBLE SANDWICH BOYS was more than a band, it was a community, a movable party that never played anywhere without a complete entourage.

In August of 1979, Ziploc was the first electric band to play at Steb's in Cedar Falls, literally beginning a tradition of alternative live music in that night club that would last twenty years. A minor claim in the big picture of rock n’ roll, but still a nice credit in the local music scene.

Ziploc and The Incredible Sandwich Boys played a variety of standard blues and rock cover tunes, but from the beginning, their primary creative interest was in writing and performing original music. Most of the songs were composed by lead singer, Emmet Carolan, with arrangements and interpretation always open to contribution from the rest of the band.

The band name was changed by the end of their approximately two year experience to The Roar. Original Stebites still remember them simply as Ziploc.

For those interested in Steb's trivia, the next band to play that Cedar Falls club after Ziploc would have been The Little Red Rooster Band, out of which Bob Dorr and Molly Nova eventually formed Bobby’s Blue Band.

Ziploc guitarist/singer, Scott Esbeck, joined the original line-up of Bobby’s Blue Band in 1981.

Band Members

As bands will do, the personnel changed over time. The original bass player was Steve Turner (S.R. Turner) and first lead guitar player was Barry Schneiderman (a.k.a Rush Cleveland).

Recordings

Ziploc did one recording session at Catamount when that studio was first starting up and still very small. Bob Dorr has a copy of that demo at KUNI Radio.
