History
The phenomenon known as Stephen Oulman's Tot Lot Band started with founders Stephen Oulman and Steve Wilson recording an impromptu rap on Stephen's front porch on 19th Street in 1994. At the time, Stephen was only 5 years old.
SOTLB songs were most often improvisations (at least on Stephen's part). In the begining, the tape recorder would be engaged, and Stephen would sing whatever came to mind. Later, on Stephen's suggestion, the group began recording songs which featured a specific topic, oftentimes being one of Stephen's potential girlfriends, other band members, or in many instances Stephen's arch rival David (refered to in most songs as "Bob Vila").
Across the next 9 years, many more members came and went, with the only constant member being Stephen Oulman. The last Oulman recordings took place in 2003.
Oulman Today
Stephen turned 18 in 2006 and graduated from CFHS. A film about him was made by Ben Wilson in 2006 (view clip here). After the Tot Lot band, he briefly experimented with Rap and Hip Hop, influenced by such artists as Eminem. A recording of his raps was made, though it was never publicly released. Today, he no longer makes music, though he fondly remembers the Tot Lot Band.
