Sherm moved to Cedar Falls in 1977 and became a regular at Steb's. He graduated with a Geography degree in the early 80's and found himself jobless. He used part of an inheiritance to buy-in as an co-owner of Steb's. Sherm co-owned and operated Steb's from the early 80's until 2000, when he and his partner Dave Mayer sold it.

Sherm was the primary booker for the bar and managed to bring national acts like the Flaming Lips and Uncle Tupelo to Cedar Falls, while also fostering a diverse local music scene.

Sherm also co-operated North Cedar Records with Dave Deibler in the mid '90s.

Sherm still lives in Cedar Falls and is a Housing and Property Assessor.
