Maximum RocknRoll (MRR) is one of the oldest and most popular punk zines in print. It started in 1977 as a punk rock radio show in the Bay Area and soon began publishing a zine in 1982. Each zine had feature articles and interviews with punk bands, political commentary, letters, record reviews, scene reviews, and most importantly, large sections of the magazine were dedicated to local "scene reports". These reports were written by local punk rock fans and described the bands, venues, and general goings-on of the punk rock scene in that area.

Many scene reports appeared in MRR from Iowa. In the early '80s, Joe Heaps Nelson, publisher of Buffalo Zine in Des Moines, wrote a number of them.
