Origin

Flight Attendants was an early solo project of Chuck Hoffman. The project began while Hoffman was attending Iowa State University in the spring of 1994 and taking a course called Intro To Music Technology. The course's lab sessions consisted of individual time in the university's Electronic Music Studio. Thrilled with the opportunity to use this studio, Chuck stayed in Ames over the Spring Break to work on a "lo-tech industrial" album, using lyrics written by his high school friend Seth Thomson and the studio's multitrack tape machine and analog synthesizers.

Origin of band name

At the time, Hoffman had subscriptions to a couple of socialist newspapers and would mine them for collage material. Noticing several articles about flight attendants on strike, he cut out as many instances of the phrase "flight attendants" as possible to use on tape cover designs.

Return to Waterloo/CF

After Hoffman dropped out of ISU, he wanted to continue the project. Initially he borrowed 4-track recorders from anyone he could, but eventually got his own.

Hoffman continued recording and releasing cassettes of Flight Attendants material until around 2000. The music varies between the "lo-tech industrial" concept, experimental sound collages and noise. and the occasional recognizable song.
