Bands

Memories

By Q. Dawg:

When I first got to CF in '83 there were no skaters, there were no (active punk or underground bands and there did not seem to be a vocal collective that supported way cool shit...mostly what I experienced was a bunch of lame people who were participating in a [liberal arts college experience...] whatever the heck that means I do not know. The common thread that first existed seemed to be the awareness that there was a larger pool of alienadoes that existed beyond the walls of our cities and states...underground music was happening at large levels on the coasts, (as usual all things take a while to filter into the consciousness of Iowans...)

I just wanted to skate and listen to some aggressive tunes. I kept hearing stories that there wqs some other dude that skated in CF. Some dude named Ed Ware...So I began hangin' around the art building. I heard he was an art student. One day I got lucky...this guy told me where he lived. (E. lived at the top of this big ole house. I used to stop by...but I would never wait long enough for him to make it down the stairs.

When he finally made it down to the door he looked pissed...but we talked about skating and how lame UNI was and just started ripping around...TBC duarteqw@yahoo.com

I lived on the same floor as Ed my first year at UNI (1981). First guy I'd seen skateboarding and he did some radical stuff on the stairs, stair rails and the bowls outside the dorm. These are a couple of shots I took of Ed when it was too snowy to skate outside.

Blurry shot of Ed ca. 1981 probably taken in Ed's room in Penthouse (12th floor Bender)
