History

(1999-2003)

An old bio written by Matt Lanigan from Lucid Entertainment.

Based out of Cedar Falls, this band got an early start in their musical careers when they began writing, recording and performing original music before they were old enough to drive. They released their debut album December 22nd and then embarked on a small tour in the spring. The following year, Defaced performed along side the areas most recognized bands such as Stick-Up Nickel, Marcato and Shiver. At the time, they were considered by many to be the most likely local group to break through mainstream and compete with national acts.

The band will supported the album, Unconscious Motives, with a tour scheduled for spring and summer of 2001.

The band consists of John Creasey (vocals), Andy Scott (guitar), Luke “Nuggz” Scott (bass) and Andrew Creasey (drums). Brotherhood runs deep in this band, and that’s not meant to be a cliché about how well they get along. They literally are brothers. Front man John Creasey shares the stage with his brother Andrew on the drums while Andy Scott and his brother Luke hammer on the strings.

The band formed in September of 1999 as ReLaPsE. They immediately started writing original songs and in March of 2000 they recorded a four-song demo. It was the experience gained from this demo recording, along with the overwhelming following that developed at early shows, that prompted John Creasey to take this band very seriously. He surrounded himself with committed and trusting supporters who could help him reach his goals. The band performed vigorously in their local area; earning them recognition in the local media and respect from everyone in the local music scene.

In May 2000, the boys competed in “GIGS,” a competitive workshop in live performance that took place at the Hearst Center. The contest included nine area bands and it was designed to judge not only their ability to write original music, but also their ability to work under pressure. They were given a limited amount of time to set up their stage show, sound check their equipment, and perform three songs. The band walked away with the first place Grand Prize which included studio time at a local recording studio, the opportunity to perform live at Steb’s (a local venue in Cedar Falls, IA), and weekly airplay on KUNI, a local college radio station. In late August, Relapse changed their name to Defaced in an effort to avoid a potential trade name conflict with another band.
