History

The Commons Ballroom at UNI was the location of a very small number of punk shows. On September 4th, 1986, BGK (from Holland), Slam (from Sweden) and DeHumanizer (from Seattle) played here at a large international hardcore show. Some floorboards were apparently damaged by the dancing and punk shows were not allowed to be booked at the Commons anymore. However, the band No Consensus played here at a wedding in July of 2000.

Lore

  • BGK stood for "Balthasar Gerards Kommando". They were on Alternative Tentacles record label. Balthasar GĂ©rard was a Dutch assassin who killed William the Silent in 1584.

Anecdotes, Memories

  • Jane Wilson says that No Consensus sounded "so much better from the bathrooms than from the actual ballroom," where they were "too loud."
