Band History
In what must have been 1996, Chris Vanderwall approached Colin McElligatt about joining him and Steve Wilson in a band, which was then just called "VW Project". The band converged for one early-evening practice in Colin's basement at 2300 Tremont. They worked through one song, a quick, guitar-based composition with a then-tricky drum stop. The song was molded to satisfaction, but the band never practiced again.
Name Origin
The band's name was coined by Steve Wilson. In November 1993, Colin recieved his first "drum set", a tin, purple, 5-drum, 1-cymbal JC Penny "Silver Series" set whose drum heads were at best comprised of thick paper. At that time, Colin had a speech impediment that led him to pronounce that this $50 toy trap set was "cwappy". This amused Steve and Chris alike, so, 3 years later (when Colin had upgraded to a second-hand maroon Tama set), this mispronunciation became a short-lived band name.
