Brian Stockdale

From The Secret History of the Cedar Valley

In addition to being the drummer for a number of punk bands, Brian Stockdale was also an experimental composer of ambient washes of lo-fi sound, many made with audio he recorded with his boombox and then slowed down and remixed with other sounds. He was doing multitrack analog recording with a boombox! Though he recorded countless works, very few of them ever were heard by anyone outside his immediate circle of friends. None were compiled and released publicly, though many wound up on mix tapes he made for his friends.

He was a master at making mix tapes, and through listening to The Underground Hour and Progression on KUNI religiously, was a key node in the viral distribution of new experimental music. He turned on countless teens in the mid 80s to bands such as The Sex Pistols, Dead Kennedys, Gang of Four, Patti Smith, Brian Eno, The Velvet Underground, John Cale, Nico, and Robert Fripp.
