Before Imaginary Friends came into existence, Fictionless (a 4-track experiment with waltzes, monotones, primarily organically produced sounds, and blended together songs) had circulated in a limited fashion for about a year. Fictionless was and is a concentrated cluster of mood swinging tangents. From this solo project was spawned an attempt to reproduce that collage in front of a live audience. Imaginary Friends played three shows. Each of those shows had different arrangements and transitions that eventually solidified into another recording project. An initial 4-track tape duplicating the shows was made to which was added (in digital format) other various vocal and instrumental tracks. The finished project reflects the original inspirations of Fictionless while simultaneously taking the concepts one step further. Almost a year after the initial formation and show of Imaginary Friends, these ideas have morphed from Imaginary Friends into Animate Objects. More layers added, more layers subtracted.
